“Has your life really been that shocking?” Jennifer asked,
returning his smile. “I don’t care what you did in the past,
David. I’m only interested in what you do from now on,”
she added.
“You can be sure I want to be with you more than
anything, all the time,” he told her.
“Were you married, or did you live with someone?”
Jennifer asked suddenly. “I need to know, David.”
“No, never,” he told her.
“Do you have any kids?”
“No, I don’t,” he replied, realizing Leroy had been right
about Jennifer’s preoccupations and doubts.
“Why did you really go to California last week? You
didn’t tell me the whole truth, did you?”
“No I didn’t tell you the whole truth, but really, you don’t
have anything to worry about. It’s not because of a woman
or family problems.” David assured her.
“If that’s true, then why did you lie to me?”
“I didn’t lie. Basically, I couldn’t tell you what I was
going to do because I didn’t know myself. But right now,
I’m very pleased I went, I can tell you. I prevented a huge
injustice from happening. I couldn’t erase all the hurt from
the past, but I managed to put an end to it, and now I feel
great.”
